Interesting Island

Michael Bay’s latest hit is a smashing movie indeed! I watched “The Island” primarily because I want to see Scarlett Johansson sexed-up by the equally charming Ewan McGregor. To my dismay, the sex scene was too closed-up and I think there was a huge cut in the commercial release. Anyway, the whole film still ROCKED because of all the action, the twist (even though this was exposed quite early in the movie), and the moving irony of life’s never-ending quest for survival.
The futuristic look of the film wasn’t all that too dominating (this I believed was a major plus factor to the overall effect). There was a mix of real life present scenes and a couple of eye-catchy technological innovations. The car chase was AWESOME (as what is expected of the notable director) with all those vehicles getting ripped apart instantaneously! Now this, I believe, must cost something right? I very much liked the chemistry between the two runaway “human harvests”. But then again, this may just be motivated by the fact that I was expecting a steamy sex scene…
I have read a lot of reviews for this film. Mostly, we Filipinos liked it a lot but as for some Westerners – they saw the film as a box-office flop. Sore reviews such as “stolen ideas from other films”, “major plot holes”, “exaggerated action sequences”, and “rubbish marketing campaign” spoiled the fun a lot! Admittedly, I made a mistake of underestimating this film but what’s important is I ENJOYED watching it. And so I’d give this movie a rating of 1.5 out of 4 (University of the Philippines’ grading scale).
